GOP Resolution Urges Action on Climate Change

Congressman Patrick Meehan (R-Pa.) today joined 16 of his fellow Republicans in the House of Representative to introduce a resolution that calls for utilizing American ingenuity and innovation to address the risk of climate change. The resolution, introduced by Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-Ny.) calls on Congress to commit to working on economically viable solutions to improve, protect and conserve our environment.

"We owe it to our kids and grandkids to ensure we leave to them a safe and sustainable planet," said Congressman Meehan. "Climate change is a serious issue, and it's prudent that Congress takes steps to mitigate the risk it poses. There are bipartisan, market-based solutions that will spur investment and innovation in clean energy sources. By pursuing them, we can reduce emissions, alleviate the damage caused by climate change and create good-paying jobs."

"I'm encouraged that a growing number of my Republican colleagues share my belief that climate change is an issue that requires action," Meehan continued. "I'm going to continue to work with the resolution's co-sponsors to build support within our Conference for addressing the implications of climate change and pursuing innovative ways to protect our environment."

The resolution calls for better environmental stewardship through "economically viable, and broadly supported private and public solutions to study and address the causes and effects of measured changes to our global and regional climates."

"The risks of climate change are far too great to get bogged down in partisan politics," said Mark Reynolds, Executive Director of the Citizens' Climate Lobby. "With this resolution, these 17 Republicans are saying that business-as-usual is unacceptable when it comes to preserving a livable world for future generations. Hopefully, their leadership will help us turn the page and move forward on solutions to this critical problem."

Pennsylvania Congressmen Ryan Costello (PA-6) and Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-8) were also among the signers.
